Obama and Romney Discuss Great Lakes

With election day nearing, both President Obama and Mitt Romney have formulated plans to discuss conserving our Great Lakes.  Both representatives have stated that they will be outlining their policy on Great Lakes protection.  Activists will be seeking commitments to continue a billion dollar restoration initiative started by the Obama administration.  

They also want a promise that will support placing barriers in Chicago area waterways to prevent Asian carp and other species from reaching the lake.  Neither side has endorsed this idea due to its controversy.

Canadian Drinking Water Facts.

If you were asked questions about drinking water facts in Canada, would you get a high score?  So far, over 1,000 kids and adults have discovered answers to these drinking water questions about the cleanliness of their water.

The survey, consisting of 9 multiple choice questions, was about the Campbell River resident’s drinking water quality.

Grants for Water Treatment

Due to the high amounts of contamination in the United States’ drinking water, the EPA has devoted $499,778 in grants towards developing low-cost water decontamination.  The water treatment facilities do have the ability to remove solids, bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, and some chemical pollutants; however they are unable to remove any pesticides or antibiotic contaminants.

Canadian Drinking Water Facts

Over 45% of the country’s total surface area is highly sensitive to acid rain.

Municipal wastewater discharges represent one of the largest sources of pollutant releases by Canadian water.

Between 1974-1996, over 200 outbreaks of infectious disease associated with drinking water were reported.

In 2000, in Walkerton, Ontario, 7 people died and 2,500 became ill due to waterborne pathogens in their drinking water.

Health problems related to water pollution in general are estimated to cost Canadians $300 million per year.

World Water Day, Sept. 18th, 2012

World Water Monitoring Day is an international program promoting public awareness of the importance of maintaining local water testing.  The day is to educate consumers on testing, monitoring, and protecting local bodies of water.
